You know that kind of experience? An experience so important, you wanted to share it with the
world; but, you couldn't find the right words?
In many places, the landscapes define the place, the people. Hualien is that kind of place, a place where Mother Earth delivers her most beautiful gemstones. Four of Earth's tectonic plates converge here, pushing mountains of pure marble from the sea, the Pacific Ocean. This precious geology weaves the backdrop of everyone's lives in Hualien.
Our mother, over 45 years ago, was so enamored with the gemstones that surrounded her
childhood, she made a hobby of travelling to other countries just to understand their land,
geology, and stone. Once, she found a bangle of bright beauty. Convinced of its pedigree by the
dealer, she bought it and brought it back home.
The evening of her first day home, her first day of wearing her new treasure, she removed the
bracelet and found red stains on her teenaged wrist. The stone was fake, painted. And, at that
moment her heart changed.
After that, much of her spare time was spent with mineralogists and in the library. Her young
mind was captivated by understanding how gems are formed. She became an expert in
gemology and jade.
As an academic, she has written an important and seminal book on local gemology. Her
nationally recognized expertise has taken her to Taiwan's Presidential Palace; and, she has
represented Taiwan's jade industry nationally and internationally on 14 separate occasions.
